Women and girls that were rescued from the streets of prostitution and are now being taught about Jesus!
Report from Delhi, India: 12-02
Isaiah 9:2
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death; upon them hath the light shined.”
"You have helped shine the light of Christ on many who could not see Him, as you supported me in going overseas with finance, encouragement and prayer. I’d like to give you a report of some of the results of your labor. Of course, the United States has a big piece of my heart and always will have. I so appreciate you standing with me as I labor here, but sending me overseas was a strategic move of the Lord for this time."
INDIA:
I don’t think “culture shock” is quite a big enough statement here! We brought the missionaries lots of food and “fun” items that they can’t get there. Which they so appreciated. On a personal level, I didn’t think it was so bad at first because it was 70-80 degrees and only 50% humidity (in the summer it is 120 degrees), which was a welcome contrast from the tropics. BUT, the other things that go on, made my body wish for Central America, where I had just spent 2 weeks. I was only home for 1 week from up near Guatemala and then I took off for India. The bathrooms, we won’t go there, but basically, they don’t believe in them or toilet paper. The mission’s house that we stayed in was “westernized” so that was a good thing! They use cow manure mixed with straw that has been dried into these Frisbee looking things (they sell them, it is an actual “industry” there….you can watch them making them on the side of the streets: kneading the straw into the manure with their hands, arms, chest, anything that will make the job easier) to keep warm and to cook. The smell is not good. Most people are hungry and desperate. When you come out of the airport, there is this huge road way that you walk down with your luggage as you exit the airport, dirt and pollution everywhere. As you walk down this “road” there is a sea of people on either side of you screaming and crying out. Some want money or food, some are waiting to pick people up from the airport. Chaos and confusion everywhere and it never seems to go away. They drive with their horns, most literally and the noise never, ever stops. We would be out sometimes in the early morning or late evening hours and the roads were full of people still! Between 11 and 12 million people in Delhi where we were in North India. The cows that the Hindus worship wander freely. People leave their garbage on the side of the road, EVERYWHERE, so that the cows can pick through it. They don’t pick this garbage up. They want the cows to enjoy it. Cows wander or wrestle with one another in the middle of the road among the cars. Bicyclists, pedestrians, ox drawn carts, people drawn carts, all share the same road. If you hit a cow with your car, even if the cow runs into you, or perhaps you just happen to get caught in the middle of a bull fight while driving your car down the road…..well, if you allow a cow to hit you or you hit it, the other motorists will get out of their cars and start beating you up for hitting the cow. The people walk in the middle of the road as if they were a vehicle. 4 or 5 times a day the sirens go off screaming at you to worship Allah. That’s the Muslim influence there. We were there during their Ramadan festival. Now what that means is that from 2 to 5 a.m. sirens, firecrackers and alarms will go off, and some guy yells at you in the Hindi language over a loud speaker that sounds like it was RIGHT OUTSIDE my door to get up and worship Allah. Then he starts singing this song, and the guy can’t sing, you know what I mean. Anyway, it is like being brainwashed and tortured at the same time. I think we were brainwashed – we got up and worshipped our God alright! The last couple nights I buried my head and I admit, I lit a candle to get rid of the manure fry smell and went back to sleep. I have repented! This “festival” goes on for a month. No wonder no one smiles in that country. It’s true, I could count on one hand the people I saw smile outside of a church meeting or crusade setting. They need Jesus. They are starving and so are the cows. If you kill a cow in North India, you go to prison for 10 years. If you kill one in South India, they said it is life in prison. Everything there speaks of oppression and dismay. Even the church had a level of oppression and apathy upon it from trying to keep her head up in all that chaos and confusion. But, the church is making great strides to move forward. The Lord broke through and brought freedom and many blessings to his Bride there. We worked with staff from Teen Challenge and the Assemblies of God while we were there and they took very good care of us. We went into the Home of Hope while we were there. This is a home that was created to minister to girls at risk who want Jesus. Girls whose parents have sold them into the slavery of prostitution and also girls whose parents have abused them. The girls were so excited to have us there. They made us lunch and we visited for most of the day. After the sermon, the girls all stood for prayer and the Lord Jesus delivered some of demons, baptized others in the Holy Spirit and healed most all from one thing or another. One girl was called out to be an evangelist another to be a political force for good. Much emotional healing was had. They were so excited to know Jesus! The missionaries there have Indian drivers for their cars for the most part when they go around town, because of the chaos and because if an American is driving a car that gets in a wreck with a national, chances are the American will suffer loss. So, with Indian drivers, a lot of that trouble is done away with. One missionary driver was sitting in a room waiting for his employer to come and because of the interpreter at the girl’s home, he understood the message and was saved. I took a picture of him after his salvation experience, what a difference! Smiling from ear to ear! I spoke at the International Church located within the United States Embassy compound. There were diplomats there from all over the world. New Zealand, England, Scotland, Nigeria, Africa, Australia, Canada. Many of them became in their words “revolutionized” and wanted more. So, beyond their church service, I had 2 special meetings especially for them along with some weary and worn out missionaries before I left. I spoke at the district convention to pastors and saw God encourage and motivate those pastors to a deeper and fuller walk. The report would be too big to share everything that happened, so just know that the move of God has happened and the Pastors are going to be part of it. One pastor said, “We will never live to see another day like this one, the Revival has begun.” Pray that their culture doesn’t wear them out. We had an “open air” women’s crusade in a town about an hour away. Churched and unchurched women came from all the surrounding villages. A deaf boy received his hearing, many tumors dissolved and broken hearts were mended. These women who had been so downcast and discouraged began to smile as the meeting went forward! It was like seeing them come to life.
One little girl was blind and as I was laying hands upon her for the Lord, He told me that he was not going to heal her. I asked Him why that was and He said to look at the mother. I did and asked the mother through an interpreter if she was a voodoo witch and she said yes. I asked her if she was willing to forsake her gods for Jesus and she said “No.” So, I told her that Jesus would not share His glory with her and I couldn’t pray for the little girl’s eyes. Jesus would heal her, but not if she was going to give false gods the credit. I prayed for peace and protection over the little girl and we both cried. The mother took her away after that. That still breaks my heart and I pray for her. We then took a 6 hour train ride up to a place called Lucknow. The train went slow enough to really see the country. We were in upper north India, about 200 miles from the Pakistan border this whole time and were now traveling closer. I thought perhaps the devastation was just in Delhi, I was so wrong! The devastation was widespread and seemed to multiply as we traveled. Every 45 minutes or so, we would pull into a “train station,” really just dumping grounds for unwanted people and garbage. The train stops lasted about 5 minutes and you could see such despair on the people, without Jesus this would be a horrible, frightening place. So many uncared for and hurting people. All around the train stations were small villages bathed in such poverty that it was hard to imagine how people survived the day. I found no dignity there for human life. Oh, how they need Jesus. Not just because of the poverty, but because of the horror of their hearts and the horrible pain that covered their faces. I wondered where the missionaries were. I wondered where the Christians were. I wondered about a lot of things. As we traveled through the country, we saw farmers tending their fields with yoke and oxen, how it must have been 2,000 years ago when Thomas first landed on this soil to spread the gospel. The Indian people were beautiful, even from the distance of the train, even in their poverty, as they worked their fields in their brightly colored Sari’s and scarves of many colors. When we got to Lucknow, sweet missionaries from Missouri met us there and put us up. The pollution was far worse there than in Delhi. In Delhi and I suppose everywhere, at least most places where we were at, lots of people walked around with handkerchiefs over their noses and mouths because of the dirt and pollution. But, in Lucknow, almost everyone did this. Some of the Indian people had masks on that I saw. Many of the handkerchiefs that they were holding to their faces were stained black from the pollution. The air was surely thick in this place. That night we had church next to the government buildings. Through an interpreter, the people were told that if they were Christians they should start acting like it and start taking their town and country for Jesus and stop co-existing with their culture. It was time to get baptized in the Holy Spirit. 70+ received the Holy Spirit at the same time. It truly was like a “mighty rushing wind.” What a beautiful sound it was.
The next morning, we had meetings with more weary missionaries and then flew back to Delhi. We then had meetings where God called people out with amazing force. The pastor told me that they had been waiting for a move of God like this for over 7 ½ years and he promised me that they would not drop it, but continue in it, casting down compromise and raising up purity with their new found liberty. Many people were given gifts straight from God at these meetings. Gifts they had been waiting and preparing to receive. I remember one woman waited a long time and caught me after a meeting and said she just had to share what God had done. Her brother is mentally ill and he’s in his 50’s. He has been ill for many years. She’s been praying for him and to no avail. She weeps over him constantly, knowing that God will someday heal him. She couldn’t get him to come to a meeting. When I walked by her she said that I touched her and God said, “I give you one of the gifts of healing. With this gift, the mentally ill will rise up at your touch. Pray as I tell you and it will be.” No wonder she got so excited. She said to me that of all the gifts she could have received, this is the one that means the world to her. She was leaving then to go and pray for her brother! So very many stories just like this one to tell…………. At the last meeting we had, I told the people that I did not come to “save India,” that was their job. I told them I would pray the Lord give them supernatural strength and anointing to accomplish this task, which is very close to His heart. I told them to want this anointing was different than receiving it and receiving it was different than carrying it. They must carry it! They will. Many were healed, delivered, baptized in the Holy Spirit and many saved. More than anything though, the Christians were shocked into the reality of their God’s intentions for them to walk in resurrection power! No matter the country or state, it is all the same; the lost need Jesus and the found need to present Him with power to their world that surrounds them! That last meeting we had was truly an upper room experience. There were many pastors there as well and they began to cry out to God for their nation. They repented and wept not only for themselves , but for the pain their apathy had caused Christ. It was a grand time of celebration afterwards that very sweetly lingered. They said that I will be back and they are right. Thank you for sending me with finance and prayer. It mattered.
