Note from Brenda

I’m filling in for Sandi here again.  By next month she hopes to do this herself.  Meanwhile I can let you know that she was completely overwhelmed by the love and support and gifts for her birthday!  The ultimate present was getting Donny out of the hospital for his first breath of outdoor air in seven weeks.  Her daughter Cynthia and daughter-in-law Amy ran her around San Francisco on a scavenger hunt in a green wig, while Donny sat in the back seat and laughed at it all. (There are pictures on our website that you have to look at!  http://www.abbasheart.com/sandifamilyPhotoAlbum.asp.)   She says her birthday was wonderful and she continues to open gifts and cards from around the country a few at a time when she gets an opportunity or needs a lift.  It’s turning into a Greek-style birthday.  Dora tells us in Greece they celebrate birthdays for 40 days.  So if you thought you missed the deadline, no worries!

Donny is home for a month, and then he will go back for the bone marrow transplant.  They are told the worst is over.  He is still very weak, nauseated, and faint, but is growing stronger every day.  Sandi still cares for him when Amy is at work, but now he’s just a few blocks away.

Next week Sandi and Martin are going to the spa in Carmel where Cynthia works to enjoy a two-day event.  This is her birthday present from all of you and she is looking forward to the “nothingness of it all” and “just simply resting in the Lord’s beautiful creation.”  The last two months have been physically exhausting for her, and this seems like a perfect recovery plan!  Thank you so much for your generous response to the birthday surprise!  On April 9 (the deadline) Dora went to get the mail and she came back with this huge rainbow-colored stack of envelopes!  We are still enjoying seeing pretty envelopes in the mail every day!  In this day of email and text messages, we forget how fun it is to see something pretty and hand-written in your mailbox! 

There has also been a steady stream of donations for the expenses related to Donny’s treatment.  The Revival Center Youth Group is holding a car wash at the Savemart parking lot in Kingsburg on May 3.  Every bit helps and the family is so appreciative of all of the funds that have come in at just the right time and just the right amount.  Thank you for being sensitive to the Spirit’s leading.

Teamwork!
A man was lost while driving through the country.  As he tried to read a map, he accidentally drove off the road into a ditch.  Though he wasn’t injured, his car was stuck deep in the mud.  So the man walked to a nearby farm to ask for help.

“Warwick can get you out of that ditch,” said the farmer, pointing to an old mule standing in a field.  The man looked at the haggardly mule and looked at the farmer who just stood there repeating, “Yep, old Warwick can do the job.”  The man figured he had nothing to lose.  The two men and Warwick made their way back to the ditch. 

The farmer hitched the mule to the car.  With a snap of the reins he shouted, “Pull, Fred!  Pull, Jack!  Pull, Ted!  Pull, Warwick!”  And the mule pulled the car from the ditch with very little effort.

The man was amazed.  He thanked the farmer, patted the mule and asked, “Why did you call out all of those other names before you called Warwick?” 

The farmer grinned and said, “Old Warwick is just about blind.  As long as he believes he’s part of a team, he doesn’t mind pulling.”
