Sandi’s Note to you Today:

The statistics say that when a people build a church, that 78% of the time, there is such a dis-unity and dysfunction that either a deluge of people leave or the Pastor leaves. Well, hallelujah, none of us are going anywhere; we beat the statistics! This has been a most beautiful time to see everyone run together like a thread being woven by the Master’s hand. It has been marvelous to see. We will say goodbye to our weird altar rug, the “Hebrew curtains,” the pillars and the busy mall. But, we will forever have the sweet memories of the homeless and drunks wandering in from the liquor store around the corner. I have memories of so many hurting people and confused people. Cal and “the boys” promise to still come “minus one drink out of respect to God.” Their group is getting smaller and smaller as they get closer and closer to the Lord. We’ve heard so many success stories of the homeless getting back to work and blessing others because of your love and help. Then there were the religious people. They were the hardest to deal with and you did that well too. Telling us we can’t do this and better not that. We just kept throwing it all to the cross and the Lord was faithful.

Classic memories: We had a missions fundraiser car wash and used the outside hose. Seemed like a normal thing to do. Broken pipe under the old bank building made the children’s room flood. Sharon was teaching that day and piled the kids up on a table and had them pretend they were fishing and did a teaching on being fishers of men! Believe it or not, this conversation happened more than once… Way more than once: “Isn’t this a bank? I need an ATM!” ... “Well we do have a working ATM right here on the other side of the church!”… “What?”

Then there was the time we couldn’t see because the lights went out (which time, you might ask!!) and we had a most beautiful time in the quiet with Jesus. The air conditioning hasn’t been working right for the last month, but a couple years ago, it was really dead and I bet it was 100 degrees in there. That night the Lord taught us the smell of hurting people. There was a flood of homeless in there cooking in the heat and some of you almost passed out. I smile when I look back to see your faces enduring for the sake of Jesus. That night a few people left and said they wouldn’t come back because they wanted a church that didn’t have a bunch of smelly people in it. Goats from Sheep. Funny thing is: Most of them are fixed up now and we are looking for more! So, we go from here to a new mission field a few blocks away. With tears of joy, sadness and yet sweet memories, we leave the old bank and say thank you to our Savior who compelled us to do what we couldn’t have done without Him. Thank you.

I love you and bless you with every blessing in the name of our Lord.  Whether from afar or nearby, your prayers have always mattered and your support of what the Lord is doing here has made such a difference. Please always let us know how we can pray for you.

As I recently told the MOGs (Men of God) of the church:

1 Samuel 12:22-24

“For the LORD will not forsake His people for His great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you His people. Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way. Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things He hath done for you.”

Donny Update

Donny continues to gain strength. The change in temperatures continue to bring him great challenges and the heat is not his friend. In the Valley in August… Need I say more! One day he can barely move, the next day he feels like he can run a marathon… Well maybe not a marathon, but move anyway! We went to the lung specialist yesterday and of course, more tests. Donny said after he got settled back in the house, with Amy’s great help, “It takes more faith for me to go from the house to the car, than to sit there and hear the Doctors tell me that I am going to die.” We will be happy for fall weather and in the meantime, take great pleasure in the challenges that the Lord presents as we know that His hands are the ones pushing and pulling, lifting up and setting down. Donny and I babysit little Abel on Thursdays and it is such a great joy.

Check his progress here: Getting better every day!

“You have been a big blessing in helping us keep the hospital and ambulance co-pays down and now with all the expenses for Donny's rehabilitation... and we thank you for that.  We are coming up on three years next week... we could not have done it alone!"

Technical Support

This past week the ministry office has had an unusual amount of technical difficulty with our equipment and a steady stream of experts coming in to save the day. For most of our problems, the solution was so simple it only took seconds to fix, after being down for hours or days. Please bear with us as we take a moment for a deep breath and a good laugh.

1. Compaq Computers are considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to "Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.

2. AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packaged in.

3. Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the system wouldn't read word processing files from his old (5 ¼”) diskettes. After trouble-shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it was found that the customer had labeled the diskettes, then rolled them into the typewriter to type the labels.

4. Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes. A few days later, a letter arrived from the customer along with photocopies of the floppies.

5. A Dell technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppy back in the drive and close the door. The customer asked the tech to hold on, and was heard putting the phone down, getting up and going across the room to close the door.

6. Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax anything. After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor screen and hitting the "send" key.

7. Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing them individually.

8. A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because his computer had told him he was "bad and an invalid." The tech explained that the computer's "bad command" and "invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally.

9. A confused caller to
IBM
was having troubles printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it "couldn't find printer." The user had even tried turning the computer screen to face the printer - but his computer still couldn't find it.

10. An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring the computer was plugged in, the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button. Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing happened." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the mouse!!

11. Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in, and sat there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power switch?"

12. Another
IBM customer had trouble installing software and rang for support. "I put in the first disk, and that was OK. It said to put in the second disk, and I had some problems with it, but I squeezed it in. When it said to put in the third disk - I just can't get it in at all!"

New Building Update

We are busy with construction and anticipate being in the new building on September 6! The final service in the current building was Sunday, August 23, and now the only services are those of volunteers helping with the move.  (Except Bible Study tonight and Tuesday prayer meeting next week is still on!)  Come help us move over to the new location at 2221 Villa. South of Shaw, just a few blocks away. Then join us in the new building as we start our fall schedule!
